Common questions about the hospital and recovery.

These are the practical questions patients and families ask most often. Questions specific to stereo EEG and to RNS are answered on the evaluation and surgery pages.

The hospital stay.

What should I bring? Comfort items for your stay. If you are being admitted to the epilepsy monitoring unit for several days, bring books, games, a laptop or phone, and anything else to pass the time, along with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and other personal care items. Bring a list of your medications and doses. The hospital supplies your medications, so you do not need to bring the bottles.

Can someone stay with me? On the adult floors there are usually no overnight visitors. Friends and family are welcome during visiting hours, 9 am to 9 pm. On the pediatric floors, one visitor can stay overnight.

What about meals? You can order any hospital food you like, and your family may bring food in if you prefer.

Recovery.

How long is recovery? The length of the hospital stay depends on the operation but is usually about two days. We generally recommend planning one month away from work or school, with the first two weeks mostly rest and a gradual return to normal activities after that. Recovery varies with the type of surgery, and we will discuss the specifics with you beforehand.

What activities should I avoid? Avoid vigorous or strenuous activity for a few weeks after surgery. No sports, gym, or lifting more than 10 pounds for four to six weeks. Walking and other low impact exercise are encouraged as you feel able.

How do I care for the incision? Shampoo every day with a mild shampoo and keep the incisions clean and dry. Your discharge instructions will cover anything specific to your operation.

Will my medications change? Not right away. Antiseizure medications usually continue after surgery, often for at least six months. Any reduction is planned by your epilepsy provider. Do not stop or change a medication on your own.
