Matteo Vissani joined the Brain Modulation Lab in 2021. He received his M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Bologna in 2017 and completed his Ph.D. in Biorobotics at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy. During his doctoral training, he focused on identifying electrophysiological “sweet spots” associated with impulsive–compulsive behaviors in Parkinson’s disease and with Tourette syndrome, combining signal processing of electrophysiological data with computational tools such as information theory.
In the Brain Modulation Lab, Matteo works on human intracranial electrophysiology and deep brain stimulation (DBS) for neuropsychiatric disorders. His research focuses on identifying neural markers of symptom states in obsessive–compulsive disorder and leveraging these signals to improve DBS targeting and programming. He integrates intraoperative recordings with sensing-enabled neurostimulation devices to study how neural activity relates to behavior and clinical outcomes over time.
Outside of the lab, he enjoys hiking, cooking and historical reenactment.
